This was the first Master’s degree course I had taken and to be honest I didn’t know what to expect. I think my nerves were getting the best of me and I started to question if I would have the ability to get good grades as I did in my Undergraduate degree but in this scenario I would be working full time. I built things up too much in my mind and I think it hindered my learning experience for the first few modules but once I realized that I could relax, my work only got better and I felt more confident in the work I was producing.
In reflecting on this course I think it a great foundation and students should be required to take it first. This course I believe lays the ground work for what is to come as a student progresses in this degree program. I think students at times just sign up for what they want and do realize that the fundamentals are the most important element in educational success. I don’t like adding negative comments but I think to be constructive in criticizing just one aspect of the course I think additional APA examples should be provided from the start and students should be required to submit work in APA format in order to prepare them for bigger papers, projects and other courses. I know I am a student’s best friend with that comment but I have good reason to feel that it is valuable in foundation courses. When writing a course you never know what your student base is going to look like so you can’t assume every student is going to know APA format. Fortunately for me I am a writer by nature and formatting is something I set the bar high on as I feel it is an important component and I feel other dedicated students should expect that of their work as well.
I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt the additional support provided to me by the University and professor of this course have been nothing but exactly what I needed. If I felt I needed additional support or information I never felt like I couldn’t reach out to my professor via email or phone call. I think that is something every professor should strive for. If a student is comfortable contacting their professor they are more likely to complete good work, retain the information they are learning and be enabled to apply that information to their life.
I don’t think there was any topic that was irrelevant in the course because I feel that each module included topics that would spark interest into what we were learning about. I would however like to see more TED videos used throughout the Leadership Program because I feel they are relevant to the students taking the Leadership courses. TED videos provide insight into all different types of leadership styles and execution from every aspect of the workforce.
I really enjoyed this course and at times I was high strung regarding assignments but I felt at the half way point everything was making sense and I was able to adapt, grow and change some of the ways I was thinking. This course enabled me to think outside of the box, explore other ideas and force me to look at myself in a different perspective. I really am glad this was the introduction in my Master’s degree courses and I am very much looking forward to journey ahead of me.
